Scammers pretend to be calling from Microsoft support - they're not!

It's a well-known problem, albeit, unfortunately, not by everyone. The problem is still there, and the callers are still pretending to be from Microsoft.

They do this so credibly that they make many PC users believe it. They state that the user's PC is faulty in order to lure the user into paying for a repair service that is not necessary.

When they succeed, the user is often handed over to a new scammer. The user is then asked to open a browser window and browse an address provided by the scammer. The user is asked to click on a link on the website that appears, and when the user clicks on the link, a number of programs are installed in the background, including

Support scammers don't call from Microsoft!

The scammer can take over the user's PC and control it remotely. The scammer then runs a series of programs that make the user's PC behave as if it was infected with a virus. It all seems very convincing and many users feel convinced that something is very wrong with their PC.

The scammer then states that he is willing to help the user repair the Windows installation for a fee, which many, in desperation, agree to. The fee can vary and be several thousand dollars.

Once the problem is "solved", the user is often offered a service agreement which, according to the scammer, should mean that the problem will not occur again Unfortunately, there are many examples of users who have been ripped off relatively large sums of money in this way for something they did not need.

It is therefore important to use common sense if you receive a call offering unarranged IT support. Microsoft, for example, will never call PC users directly with offers of support.

That's why we strongly recommend that you end a conversation immediately if it's in the nature of unsolicited IT support.
